about

Rekeeps is a fictional business promoting sustainability by reducing paper waste through a mobile app for all receipts. By using the app, users can easily scan their phone or smart watch during a transaction at any participating store and their receipt will automatically save on their device.

Through multiple user testings, interaction models, wireframing, and prototyping, the app was able to solidify its main purpose for its target audience.

To accomplish an impactful outcome, this project required a significant amount of research. From finding a solution for a shared issue to curating the right color scheme that will emotionally engage with users, Rekeeps was mindfully developed using experimentations and precise analysis.

research & process

After conducting research, I found that many users either opt out of printing a receipt to reduce paper waste or they print out a receipt without knowing where it goes afterwards.

  • Most still want their receipts but the key problem is the aftermath of the receipt - where does it go?

  • On average, how long does it take for people to enter their information at the register when they want to email/text the receipt?

  • How many people decline and accept the receipt from the register?

users

  1. On-the-go adults ages 25-47 who want to keep track of their purchases but do not want a physical copies

  2. Folks ages 48 and above who naturally keep printed receipts for future reference and/or to file.

process:

A Few Challenges:

  • Storage - users’ main concern is: “where will all the receipts be stored?”

  • How can we easily filter through the receipts for users who use this app for filing purposes?

  • Can this app be used for returns/exchanges?

  • Many of our users lie in the older age group, how can we simplify the app for all age groups can easily navigate?

user personas Delilah A., 38 y/o

Delilah is a middle-age, work-at-home mom that cares deeply about the environment. During her free time, she likes to clean her community and prevent global warming. She teaches yoga and frequently goes surfing. She does not like using plastic and prefers not to use anything that will result in killing the environment.

Frustrations:

  1. Has too many receipts laying in her wallet

  2. Paper waste

  3. Clutter

Goals:

  1. Wants a record of all receipts without having a clutter of paper receipts and to reduce paper waste

Bobby A., 25 y/o

Bobby is a recent graduate and has started working at a marketing agency in LA. His life is now fast-paced and does not have time to stand around and do nothing. He’s always on his feet and tries to find ways to be more efficient with the little spare time that he has. On his off days, Bobby likes to go eat out and relax before diving into a heavy work-load week.

Frustrations:

  1. Long lines

  2. Slow-pace environments

  3. Has so little time

Goals: Wants a faster and more efficient way of retrieving receipts

During this self-study, I rounded up a handful of users who fit the user criteria made for this app. They gave valuable feedback that helped me shape a better experience for the final product.

user testings

Test Scenarios:

  1. You are a new user and have made an account. Explore how the drop-down menu works.

  2. You’re up at the cash register and would like to use the app to save the receipt. How do you do so using the app?

  3. How do you delete a receipt?

  4. Find the Target receipt you scanned from last week.

  5. Export that Target receipt to your camera roll.

A Few Feedback & Solutions:

The user testings were successful and I gathered a lot of insight on how users would actually use the app. There were instances where navigation was not clear and the users struggled to move forward with the task.

  1. For example, when a user was locating an old receipt, there was no proper way to filter the receipts. The categories were not clear and took them longer than expected to locate the receipt. The solution was to categorize them in 2 different ways to easily filter: date and store. Another round of testings pushed me to add more specific categories to the filters when another set of users ran into the same issue.

  2. Some users struggled to quickly find the app on their phone when asked to demonstrate how they would scan it at the register. The solution was to consider adding it to their phone wallet.

  3. Regarding storage, how can I eliminate users from turning away from the app due to the app using their phone storage? A solution could be implementing a 3rd party storage plug-in.

designing & the final product

Many app users are often on the move and lack the time for printed receipts. Therefore, the app's usability should be straightforward, allowing for easy navigation with just a swipe of a finger. By implementing identifiable buttons, quick action item callouts, simple step navigation, and readable text, users can easily find their way around the app when on the go.

Since this app is all about sustainability, going for earthy colors in the branding was a no-brainer. And for the font, I picked a rounded serif one to give off a more natural and cheerful vibe.

What I learned:

I learned that some aspects can’t be added, for example, I received a lot of suggestions regarding how many categories to add under filters. But when does "too many" become a concern? 8 filters might be to little for some while too many options for others. I learned that not all users will be pleased with some design choices.

This was one of my first projects as an aspiring UX/UI Designer. Through countless trial and errors, I was able to get to a spot where users (during user testings) seamlessly used the app with minimal app errors. Although there are plenty of future bugs to re-assess, this self-study was a great starting point for my career. I learned how important it is to consider the users’ needs and why we put them front and center when it comes to product design.
